Under Ground

All my potatoes are buried now. Phew. Fifty seed potatoes at the allotment and 40 grown from true seed in a patch of the back yard. The little plants from seed are pictured below - quite promising I think, and hopefully big enough to fend for themselves in the great outdoors.

I've never even heard of growing potatoes from seed. I'm feeling like an ignoramus. What are the advantages?

I'm just curious to see what I get. They will potentially be all new varieties, I guess, with combinations of characteristics present in the mix that I grew last year.
Also, I do believe that they are more likely to be disease-free than planting out tubers saved from last year.
